Due to the nature of EMDR therapy, it is important that the therapist and client have a strong rapport prior to starting memory processing. 

EMDR consists of 8 phases which all assist in preparing the client to tackle difficult memories. EMDR will not eliminate your difficult memories; however, EMDR therapy will attempt to rewire the memory for you to decrease distress when the memory surfaces.
